I’ve been frequently seeing Three Square lately in the news. This organization is a food bank that feeds food impoverished families in the Las Vegas area. Most of the work is performed by volunteers who dedicate hours of their time to helping provide food to hungry children and families. I wanted to share my past and ongoing experiences volunteering for this amazing organization.
Volunteering for Three Square was a journey that I embarked upon many years ago when I worked for Louis Vuitton. Different levels of the company participated in this volunteer program from corporate and store managers to sales and operations associates. We would go once a month and pack weekend food bags for kids that needed it. This would always be in the evening, so you would’ve had to work a morning shift that day. We went to the main location which looks like a giant warehouse, located in the north side of Las Vegas. During our volunteer work, we would go down a line with various bins of food and put different items in a bag. After we finished filling the bag, we would drop it off at the end and then start back at the beginning filling another bag. These bags would be provided to kids who qualify for the weekend backpack program.
Years later I became a teacher at a Title 1 school, where many students utilized the weekend backpack program. Seeing the same bags that I had packed in the past given to my students really hit home for me. Three Square has always been an active part of my mind and heart since I first heard about and volunteered for the program. I want to continue to make a difference helping this organization, by dedicating hours of my time supporting it. I’ve been reaching out to family, friends, and co-workers to create a group that might also want help the community. Otherwise I might be rollin’ solo on this project but no worries.
I just recently participated in a new volunteering opportunity with Three Square. I signed up to pass out food to families in a drive-thru parking lot. This experience has been amazing so far. I met some interesting and friendly people. I was surprised to see that many of the volunteers worked for the school district like I do when I signed in. The group I was assigned was comprised of college students, a lady that says she works in the film industry (NOT the adult film industry), and an older gentleman who was really quiet. We put food in the trunks of people’s car as they drove up. It was nice to get out of the house and do something that will help society and talk with some fellow do-gooders. I’m looking forward to my future upcoming volunteer experiences with Three Square, hopefully I will have some new stories to share soon. 🙂
